Eggs

Not sure why, but I’ve long been fascinated with the idea of wooden eggs. They are surprisingly tactile. People often pick them up and explore that shape and texture with their hands.

I’ve played around with variations on the theme. There are a great many web articles that can be found on the math for the shape of eggs. One approach has been what I refer to as a “standard egg”. This is illustrated in the above figure. The shape is based on 4 arcs: a semicircle, a quarter circle, and two eights circles.

Another approach that I’ve found and used is a parameterized equation:

Playing with these parameters using a spreadsheet plot the values A=.75, B=.5 and K=.6 seem to work well.

The egg below is about 5″ tall and is made from aromatic cedar.

This one is one of the first I made, it uses cherry, walnut and ash.
